"Om Sarva Mangala Mangalye,
Shive Sarvatha Shaadhike,
Sharanye Triambake Gowri,
There is a saying that fate can be won by knowledge. What does this mean? What is fate and what is knowledge? The result of a man's deeds in his previous birth is called fate. If a tenth standard student writes exam the result will come in papers he wrote. Likewise whatever a man commits whether be it sin or charity in his previous birth, the result of which he will have to face in his next birth as his fate. The consequences of the deeds of man in his previous birth is called fate.
There will be no problem for a person if his life is full of goodness and his deeds all bring harmony in his life. He can be happy. But if there are worries and sufferings in his life he will not like it. He would want to change it and therefore reduce his suffering. It is said that such a fate could be acquired by wisdom. If so, what is wisdom?
Everybody thinks that wisdom means knowledge. It is not possible to win the fate with knowledge. Fate is written by Amma. It is written by Amma according to your deeds whether they were sinful or charitable. That cannot be won just by knowledge. Here knowledge means wisdom! Devotion! A good thought cultivated by devotion is called wisdom. Good character cultivated by devotion is called wisdom.
If there are good thoughts there will be good deeds. The suffering or harmony resulting from your deeds whether they were sinful or charitable, done knowingly or unknowingly is called fate. Fate can be acquired by wisdom. Devotion cultivates good thoughts in a person. If a person has good thoughts and a good character and does good deeds, what will he receive? He will receive good Karma which will change his fate. The impact of fate will be reduced.
If a man has to suffer for 60 days, and he gets involved in charitable work with devotion his sufferings may be reduced to six days. Suffering will not be removed completely because it his fate and will not disappear. Only the impact of his fate will be reduced through devotion.
What is meant by good deeds? It means thinking about Amma; praying to Amma; service to mankind as much as you can. It is a general thinking that only rich people can do charitable service. This is not true. What is meant by service? Doing whatever you can do is service. That is Dharma. That is called charity.
There is no rule in Dharma that says one must give thousands of rupees to be charitable. If one is able to give a lakh of rupees that is well and good. If one is able to spend only a thousand rupees that is also good. If a man is able to spend only a hundred rupees he can do so. If a man is able to spend only one rupee, he can very well do so.
Devotion is the greatest strength a person can have. Any other strength may leave us; but strength of devotion will always be within us because devotion comes from our minds. It is the greatest strength for a person and for the whole society. When each and everyone is living with that strength, everybody will live with peace and happiness.
On this auspicious day Amma bless that all the living beings in the universe be peaceful, joyous and happy.
