Amma's Full Moon (Pournami) Message: 25-07-2010:

"Om Sarva Mangala Mangalye,

Shive Sarvatha Shaadhike,

Sharanye Triambake Gowri,

Narayani Namostute"

This Pournami is very auspicious. Today is Guru Pournami. On this day great saints were bestowed with wisdom. Who is Guru? Human beings seek Divine grace and pray to be blessed by God. But why is there a Guru between mankind and God. Without a guru, it not possible to get the grace of God. This is because the Guru is the one who shows us the path to reach to God. By showing this path, the Guru rescue human beings who are in darkness of ignorance and shows them the light of wisdom.

Why is a Guru celebrated and why is a Guru worshiped? Well let us say a person is very wealthy and wants to reach a place that he has not been before, he will have to ask for directions. For instance to go to Ganges river one has to ask for directions from someone who has been there. Therefore we all need someone to show us the way to reach a destination. A Guru is one who can guide us to the spiritual path and take us to the Divine.

In our life we face a number of problems. In the middle of these trouble times how do we acquire peace and remain in harmony without problems? The Guru can provide the answer to this. Either during this birth or in the earlier births by performing austerities and penance, true Gurus have discovered how to attain peace and stay calm in this world and how to reach God. They have also experienced the state of Divinity. Only such Gurus can show us the path to reach the God.

Who is bigger, is it the Guru or God? After seeing only good characteristics, we accept a guru. The Guru has certain specific qualities. The first is wisdom. First and foremost the Guru has wisdom and directs human beings on the correct path; the Guru also has unconditional love and kindness. A Guru is only accepted when the Guru has these characteristics.

A Guru is not accepted simply by the Guru's appearance. We only accept a Guru who can give us peace, wisdom, love, happiness and harmony. He is the one whom you will be able celebrate and the one who will give you peace, wisdom, love, happiness and harmony.

Where do you think these characteristics come from in a Guru? The qualities and characteristics such as kindness, love, wisdom, and generosity are derived from Amma (Sri Narayani). All these characteristics that we praise are that of God, these are from Amma. A Guru is not different from God. A Guru is the figurative form of God. Guru is the strength of God.

Devotion to a spiritual Guru is the highest form of devotion. One can seek pardon from Guru after committing a mistake to God. But one can't commit mistakes with a Guru and go to God. God very kindly descends to this earth as a Guru in the form of a human for the sake of human beings, as they cannot feel or see God in the original form. There is no power above a Guru. One approaches the Guru or God only when he faces difficulties but this should not be. One should always be in contact with this supreme power.

There are two types of devotees. One type of devotee is the one who is devoted to the Divine only with the expectation that good things will come his way or he will be rewarded. The other type is the one who is devoted only for acquiring the grace and love of the Divine. The first category of devotees will not get happiness that is permanent.

In human life one has to face sadness as well as happiness. Those who are devoted to a Guru for happiness, remain devoted only when he is happy. When he is sad there is no devotion and there will be no peace.

Devotion is surrender. Devotion to a Guru is totally surrendering oneself to the Guru.

What is life? What is misery and how to get over this? How does one remain without committing sin? The Guru is the one who shows us the way. Guru's abode is not a place for atonement. When one does anything without acquiring wisdom he will face difficulties. To get the full grace of the Guru one should surrender with total devotion.

We enjoy seeing the glow from a lighted bulb inside the home. However the current that lights the bulb come from a transformer. We are able to enjoy the light from the bulb because there is less current where the voltage is low. However we would not be able to enjoy the transformer because it is dangerous to go close to because of the intense current due to the high voltage flowing through it. Therefore a human being can only see the extent of power it takes to light the bulb and not to the extent of power from a transformer.

Similarly God is the supreme power. Since human beings cannot approach God while God is in the form of such a supreme power, hence the reason God transforms into the form of a Guru and descends on this earth in such an approachable form.

We should not think that Guru should be the way we want the Guru to be. We should be what the Guru will like. Everyone would like the Guru to be way he perceives a Guru to be or God should be the way he wants God to be. But this should not be because one does not really know what is necessary for him in this life only the Guru or God knows. When you are with Guru you will learn how to live, how to handle difficulties etc. By this you will attain peace in life.

The one who shows the path to attain peace is the Guru. Therefore everyone should accept a Guru whom they like and surrender in totality and find a path of light to lead a harmonious life instead of seeking temporary solutions.

Amma blesses all the living beings in the universe to live happily and harmoniously.
