India’s Presidential visit to the Peedam

Preparation for visit

This past week and a half has been a very memorable time for everyone at Peedam and the town of Vellore, in preparation for the Presidents’ visit. Once confirmation was received that the President will be visiting Vellore, the authorities had the challenge of preparing helipads for three helicopters to land.

The authorities put in a request to Amma for assistance with this task as they were very concerned with the short time frame in which they had to get this done. Amma suggested that the helipads can be built within close proximity to the Sripuram boundary wall, and the location was then approved for the construction.

The construction work on the Helipads was completed in a record time of just nine days much to the surprise of the authorities. Two days before the Presidents arrival the authorities scheduled and completed a test run of the helipads. The presidential pilots later on landing were very appreciative of the location and quality of the helipads.

The President’s Tour

At 12:15am on December 1st, 2005, the helicopters landed with His Excellency the President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. A convoy of twenty four cars led the distinguished visitor to the Christian Medical College followed by a visit to The Vellore Institute of Technology.

At 3.30pm Beloved Amma arrived at the Sri Narayani Hospital in preparation for the President’s visit. At 4:10pm, the President arrived at the hospital, was greeted with a traditional welcome and escorted to the Meditation room at the hospital for an audience with Amma.

Amma describes the Sripuram project to the President

The President was briefed about the Sri Narayani Peedam and the various charitable programs being done. Amma gave the President a detailed explanation of the Sripram project. After a short walk around the hospital his Excellency left greatly impressed with what he had seen and heard about the programs being carried out at the Peedam.

A memento of a letter was presented to the President; in which Amma has subsidized Rs 50,000/- each for thirty children in need of open heart surgery identified by the Presidential Office. The President was deeply moved by this gesture and indicated that this is one of the best mementos he has received.
