| SAAP is to promote ecological security,
restoring ecological balance, conserving biological diversity, to
ensure sustainable use of the natural resources, minimize pollution
and wasteful consumption. This pilot project is being carried out
by Sri Narayani Peedam under the able guidance of the Forest Department
(Central Government). Project SAAP future plans are to develop a
green belt in and around Vellore valley phases. The project also
aims to provide employment opportunity to the local villages in
developing, protecting the forest cover, and also educating the
villagers in making a livelihood out of eco-friendly and recyclable
natural resources without deforesting.
Further SAAP’s grand objective is to develop:
a) Greenery in and around Vellore valley
b) Lower the temperatures of Vellore area
c) Increase the rainfall
d) And thus eradicate the water scarcity in the Palar basin
The following is the order of the plan for SAAP
a) Study the Plan for protecting the scant forest cover available
b) Propose / Plan new forest cover to be provided
c) Educate villagers on the importance of providing / protecting
/ developing forest cover
d) Instill self restraint among villagers not to poach, destroy
the forest cover
e) Educate the villagers about self employment
f) Locate check Dams for soil conservation to increase ground
water supplies
g) Enhance conservation efforts and crop yields
h) Work out modalities of sharing forest yields
i) Locate fire and water towers
j) Ensure public participation in the scheme
k) Integrate public at grass root level to ensure the success
of the programme
l) Develop sufficient human resources both volunteers and paid
m) Bring in new technologies to develop, maintain and sustain
the forest cover
As a result of SAAP significant changes in the vegetation of Kailasagiri
Hills is noted. With the concurrence of the Forest Department, Sri
Narayani Peedam had recruited personnel to man specific areas in
order to prevent fire, grazing by cattle and discourage felling
of trees by trespassers.
